Default So Sick of Rush

I mean, they are a great group and as tight as can be, but, their music is just... boring. Can't dance to it, can't jam out to it, I definitly couldn't crank it in the car for some driving music.

When I'm playing bass, everyone wants to talk to me about Geddy Lee. Here's my opinion of him- He's an awesome bassist and a very talented multi-instrumentalist. His biggest talent is his ability to lock in with Neil Peart for a monster rhythm section. However, I don't feel the need to emulate his technique or strive to get his tone. I like a little more bottom end in my tone.

Neal Peart- Probably the best member of Rush, but I wonder if he knows how to play a shuffle or simple ballad. Every song doesn't need 32nd note triplet fills and midi triggered sounds.

Alex Lifeson- The most underrated member of rush. No one talks about him, maybe for good reason. He's an able guitarist that is able to cover many different styles and make up for empty spaces in the sound of a three piece. I often wonder, however if he knows what a guitar sounds like. He has no basic guitar tone, it's all drenched in modulation effects and delay.

Also, their music just makes me yawn.

I see postings from people who just go gaga over their stuff. I bet they almost sell more DVDs of their concerts than CDs of their music.

Anyways, that's my rant for the day. Do you agree or disagree, and why?

Haha. So did I, actually.

I can't stand Rush. I was able to listen to them in small doses years ago because my best friend was obsessed with them. That got old pretty quickly. The final straw came after a night of heavy partying and we stumbled back to my apartment where he produced a copy of Rush: Live in Rio.

As far as musicianship, I have respect for them but it ends there. If it were me that was getting hounded about Geddy Lee, I'd get a black Jazz Bass (complete with maple board and black blocks) and throw an anti-Rush sticker on it.

That's not a bad idea!

It gets really bad because sometimes I play bass and keyboards at the same time. People think I'm trying to be Geddy but, the reality is that I'm better at playing the bass lines with hammer ons on the bass while I'm playing the melody on the keys than I am at playing the bass line on the keys. When I do that, people REALLY start telling me how good Geddy is and how fancy I'm trying to be. Nope, just a means to an end.

That just sucks. I hate when people draw parallels like that.
You should just make a mockery of it. Grow your hair out, wear a RUSH shirt, grow a little soul patch, wear cheesy glasses.
Or tell everyone that you learned to do it by playing in a one-man RUSH tribute band.

lol yeah.

I go on TalkBass once in a while and I think there's a Rush or Geddy thread on every page. I guess that's what triggered my rant.

Well, I won't knock the musicianship of the members but I don't really understand all of the Geddy Lee love. I may be missing something but I've never found his playing to be more than adequate. I must be missing something.

I know everyone wishes that I can play like anyone else but me, but I don't blame them!
