So, what do you prefer if your acoustic doesn't have a pin on the upper bout? Do you drill into the bout, drill into the heel, or do the "old stand-by" and tie the end of the strap off behind the nut?
I've usually just played it safe and tied it to the headstock. Drilling through the upper bout works great because it puts everything in a familiar place for guitarists who are used to playing electric. The problem with that is you have to attach a piece of wood to the inside of the upper bout so you have something to drill into. The heel is plenty sturdy, but it is hard to use strap locks sometimes and people also can have fancy engraving on the heel that you don't want to drill through. I've done both in the past for customers when I had better tools and no fear, and they all turned out well. One nice thing about the old shoe-lace behind the nut is that there is no neck dive at all and it is easier to reach the fretting positions, but, it puts your strumming arm back a bit further than normal.

If the guitar is a beater, I would drill into the hill. If it were a nice Martin or the like, I would have second thoughts about going that route.

Yeah, that's what I like to do. Cutting or bending a block to fit on the upper bout is a pain and is tough to get in there unless there's a big sound hole to work through.
I got my Ibanez acoustic playing better by putting a washer under the truss rod adjuster so it had better threads to thread on. I might send it out to get Pleked and see what I think.
