What is up with the neck dimensions?! I can't get over it. Univox basses (the Hi Flyers anyway) had a neck width of- get this- 2-1/8". I was going to turn a couple of the bass bodies into Mosrite clones but I would actually need to widen the neck pocket to accomodate a stadard guitar neck.
Seriously. What's up with that?
I've never played a Univox bass and I'm not sure that I'd want to. The neck just seems far too narrow to navigate. On this bass that I got from Monte, the neck is 2-1/2" wide and is narrow compared to my other bass neck. That's a 3/8" difference in the heel.
On a side note: About five years ago, I walked into a little music store in Bangor, Maine, and they had two beautiful guitars in the window. A 1993 Fender Duo Sonic and a vintage Univox Hi Flyer (white with maple fretboard). The Duo was $199.00 and the Hi Flyer was $299.00.
I bought the Fender but I kicked myself all weekend. I went back a week later to see if the Univox was still around and the guy told me that he just sold it on eBay for something like $600.00.
